  • Overview

    The position requires a minimum of five (5) year of Supervisory experience in Archaeology, with a minimum of 4 of these years in Historical Archaeology. The Archaeologist’s primary responsibilities encompass assisting Raba Kistner Environmental, Inc. in building a successful cultural resources practice and coordinating all aspects of archaeological services with the Cultural Resources Program Director.


    The Archaeologist shall be assigned project management responsibilities ranging from conducting field research to developing Scopes of Work, budget and proposal preparation, production work, and project/client meetings. The Archaeologist shall support the firm’s objectives of meeting our clients’ expectations in a timely manner while achieving his/her Units’ profit objectives.


    The Project Archaeologist actively (1) manages the day-to-day cultural resources business including planning, staffing and execution of all work, (2) leads by example and sets high standards for creativity and inter-office and intra-office cooperation, and (3) is responsible for developing and maintaining staffing levels and competencies, in coordination with the Cultural Resources Program Director, with the type of work available and volume.


    • Conducts archaeological investigations including preparation of scopes of work and research designs, obtaining the appropriate TAC permits, pedestrian survey, Phase II eligibility testing, and Phase III data recovery documentation
    • Conducts historical archival research
    • Coordinates as needed with sub-consultants including archaeologists, architectural historians, etc.
    • Conducts project background research at the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory, the CAR-UTSA Archives, Office of Historic Preservation and the Municipal Archives
    • Understand, adhere and participate in the Raba Kistner Health and Safety and Behavior Based Safety Programs and set a good safety example
    • Other duties as assigned by Direct Report.



    • Serves as Project Manager and/or Project Professional on cultural resource projects
    • Provides mentorship and professional development to other professional, technical, clerical and support staff members
    • Responsible for the preparation of archaeology permit applications
    • Prepares and/or peer reviews reports from project data and field observation notes
    • Conducts analysis of field data and historic and prehistoric artifacts recovered to aid the preparation of report data
    • Revises and finalizes reports as required to meet client's needs, and those of the THC and/or City oversight agencies
    • On assigned projects, responsible for the preparation of proposals and responses to RFQs
    • Assist with Geophysical Surveys
    • Assist in developing and utilizing GIS data for project specific assignments.


    • Manages projects in a fiscally responsible manner.
      (2) Plans and effectively utilizes managerial skills to advance the Department’s profitability and the effectiveness of all archaeology staff
    • Plans, coordinates and documents satisfactory training of all environmental laboratory, field, and clerical staff
    • Provides technical/project management training and mentoring to our professional and technical staff members
    • ssists senior management to monitor technical and loss prevention practices to ensure his/her Unit is in substantial compliance with good accepted practice


    • Possess a Masters of Anthropology degree with a minimum of five (5) years applicable experience
    • Have or ability to obtain certification for providing Archaeological and Archival Research services under Texas Department of Transportation contracts
    • Possess valid Texas driver’s license and meet firm’s automobile insurability requirements
    • Must satisfy employment medical requirements
    • Verbal and written skills to prepare technical reports, communicate effectively with coworkers, clients, and contractors
    • Excellent writing skills for correspondence, proposals and reports
    • Ability to lift and carry equipment (45+ pounds) and sample containers
    • Ability to work independently
    • Presents a professional appearance commensurate with senior position in the firm
    • Ability to drive company vehicle, manage and complete all assigned jobs, efficiently and on time
    • Ability to comply with all attendance requirements as noted in most current edition of Corporate Policy Manual.


    • Works outside and is subject to weather conditions
    • Potential exposure to equipment movement hazards and dangerous chemical/solvents if proper safety procedures are not followed
    • Exposed to noise, dust, fumes, grease and oils, radiant and electrical energy, and vibration
    • May work protracted or irregular hours
    • May work weekends/holidays and out-of-town projects
    • Ability to travel to sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain and/or slippery surfaces
    • May work on ladders and in confined spaces
    • Work related responsibilities require travel out of town to Raba Kistner offices, client offices, and project locations

    Must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to post-accident, random, and reasonable cause testing during employment.
