  • Overview

    Under general supervision, the Laboratory Supervisor’s primary responsibility will be to supervise, coordinate, and train laboratory and field construction materials testing technician staff. Responsible for directing crews in the field and provide accurate logging of samples and tests, and documentation of other pertinent data. Additionally, responsibilities will include assisting with site coordination of testing services on the construction site.


    • Conducts and supervises plant inspections and laboratory testing, as required

          Following testing operations:

          - Display samples for viewing
          - Organizes samples
          - Checks and verifies all calculations
          - Evaluates test data
          - Performs statistical analysis on data sets and prepares run charts
          - Reports data under the Direct Report’s supervision in accordance with established procedures

    • Coordinates individual assignments for laboratory and field technicians
    • May serve as dispatcher in making daily individual assignments for laboratory and field technicians
    • Assists with preparation and processing of reports as well as other administrative duties
    • Performs Operational Walk Through and Competency Testing
    • Checks time records of technicians daily for accuracy and approves
    • Performs or oversees routine maintenance of laboratory inspection equipment as well as the calibration and proper documentation of all applicable equipment
    • Recommends equipment for procurement
    • Performs or oversees performance of specialized field services and troubleshoots processes and client concerns
    • Maintains an adequate stock of routine supplies and materials
    • Conducts performance reviews of assigned technicians
    • Assigns general housekeeping duties including trash removal, sweeping floors, dusting, cleaning windows, and storage and disposal of test samples
    • Provides training and instructional guidance to field and laboratory technicians
    • Review project plans and specifications to prepare testing scope
    • As requested, supports Management to settle disputes or defend against litigation
    • Safe utilization, storage and maintenance of all documents and tools
    • Contact assigned direct report for priorities and deadlines for assigned tasks
    • Update Direct Report of progress and delays on every task or assignment
    • Safe usage and maintenance of company vehicle and laboratory/testing equipment including use within company policy
    • Carry out assigned duties in accordance with established procedures meeting directed priorities and deadlines
    • Meet directed priorities and deadlines
    • Maintenance of license and/or certifications at the time of employment or obtained during employment
    • Oversee the performance of field and laboratory testing
    • Monitor professional practice updates, including Quality Standards and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) protocols
    • Knowing and tracking project budgets for assigned area
    • Recording number of billable tests, preparation of Alpha Sheets, where required, and tracking of direct expenses
    • Notification to Corporate Safety & Risk Manager and of all accidents and potential disputes that may lead to legal claims or litigation
    • Understand, adhere and participate in the Raba Kistner Health and Safety and Behavior Based Safety Programs and set a good safety example

    • Licensed as a professional engineer within the applicable jurisdiction. (Professional engineers licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the requirements of the Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the Texas Board of Professional Engineers within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.)
      A person in this position generally, but not necessarily has eight (8) years progressively responsible experience in field/laboratory testing with one (1) year experience in supervision
    • Shall possess a valid driver’s license within the applicable jurisdiction and meet firm’s auto insurability requirements.

    • Supervise
    • Plan and coordinate work activities, oversee programs, interpret engineering plans, and instruct.
      • Lift (60 lbs.)
    • Move 100 lbs.
    • Assign and review work
    • Communicate effectively orally and in writing to communicate problems, status of work, daily reports, etc.
    • Work under exposure to inclement weather conditions
    • Read and understand plans, specifications, instructions, labels, reports, etc.
    • Travel to project sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain
    • Prepare and maintain records, files, and reports
    • Use hand tools such as sledgehammers, shovels and picks
    • Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external personnel
    • Follow verbal and written instructions
    • Analyze, problem solve, and recommend solutions
    • Troubleshoot material and testing deficiencies and develop solutions
    • Perform history trend analyses
    • Ability to drive company vehicle, manage and complete all assigned jobs, efficiently and on time

    Required to:

    • Present a professional appearance to best represent the firm
    • Wear personal protective equipment and comply with all safety requirements
    • Comply with all attendance requirements as noted in most current edition of Corporate Policy Manual

    Must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to post-accident, random, and reasonable cause testing during employment.
